16 or 17 Trillion?

“I don’t see what it matters whether you’re 16 trillion or 17 trillion in debt just borrow the money and let’s get on with life.” I heard these words coming from somewhere in the men’s locker room this morning after my swim. Everyone reading this blog who knows me knows that I had to respond so I answered the unknown voice. “What’s the difference between swimming 1 mile or 2 miles just keep moving your arms and get on with drowning.” The voice retorted that I knew he couldn’t swim and he doubted that I could swim 2 miles. I was so quickly defended by other voices that I didn’t reveal that I’d only swam ½ mile today although I normally swim 1 ½ miles. After the defense rested the first voice ask me how a man of my age and size could possibly swim that far. To which I replied: “The same you way you eat an elephant. One bite at a time!” I didn’t start out swimming by the miles; I started out swimming by the stroke. If I’d tried for the miles at first I’m certain I wouldn’t be swimming today because discouragement would have set in and I would have quit or drown. Yes, I am a fiscal conservative and I do believe there is a difference between not paying on a 16 trillion debt and instead borrowing another trillion. I also believe it is possible to purchase a new home in a down economy if you prepare that elephant correctly. Just make sure you can digest the bites you’re going to be chewing on after the closing. It is true that right now you can buy more house for your money. It’s also true that you can bite off more than you can chew but it’s a great time to take a bite. By the way, the voice that couldn’t see any difference between owing 16 or 17 trillion is a certified public accountant. Remember this little incident next time you read in the paper that the “experts” are voicing their gloom and doom predictions and realize they don’t always know up from down. If you’re ready to make the first step give us a call and we’ll size up the course, assess your talents, determine a pace, and take that first step of getting on with life.
