This day in history . . .

To be quite honest I didn’t know what to blog about today so I decided to go see what happen on this day in history.  There seemed to be a number of earth shattering events, some well know births, and yes even a welcomed or unwelcomed death or two.  However, there was nothing that really helped get my blogging juices going until I learned what happen on May 8, 1976 at Six Flags Magic Mountain.  I don’t know why I don’t remember this event except that I was somewhere in Central America doing something for Uncle Sam that I probably wouldn’t be able to talk about even if I’d known what I was up to and could now remember it.  This event in California was of monumental status at least to the Six Flags family but until a few minutes ago I didn’t even know it happened.  As I recall in the spring of 1976 all I wanted to do was go home and see my family.  I can imagine the crowds that were gathered at Six Flags in eager anticipation of this new ride all bond together by a common interest but I wasn’t there.  There were a few people surrounding me that day as well with the common goal of finishing the task at hand and going home.  I’m quite certain that in California that day as well as in Central America there were more people completely ignorant of the accomplishments of Six Flags or myself either willfully or accidentally.  The big difference between where I was at and Six Flags was that when we completed our task and it was time to go home we got more excited.  There were tears at Six Flag at the end of the day and a few upset stomachs.  On May 8, 1976  the rollercoaster Revolution (roller coaster), the first steel coaster with a vertical flip, opened at Six Flags Magic Mountain.  I’m not a fan of roller coasters and I was busy elsewhere or I might have known this little fact of history.  On May 8, 1976 in the United States of America I believe that there were more people purchased a new home than watched the roller coaster do a vertical flip.  Their names are listed in a tax record somewhere but on that day they were excited and so was their REALTOR®!  In 36 years most of the events happening today will be forgotten but you won’t forget the new home you purchased today and neither will the REALTOR® who got just as excited as you did.  Call us today and we’ll help you get excited about real estate without a vertical flip or upset stomach.

Believe in Yourself!

When he was 70 years old, legendary baseball player Ty Cobb was asked, “what do you think you’d hit if you were playing these days?” Cobb, who had had an impressive lifetime batting average of .367, responded: “About .290, maybe .300.” The reporter then said: “That’s because of the travel, the night games, and all the new pitches like the slider, right?” “No,” said Cobb, “it’s because I am 70!” It seems to me that we spend way too much time making excuses for why something won’t work for us anymore clip_image002instead of having confidence in ourselves. I have a motivational picture on the wall in front of my desk that reads, “The only thing in life that you have complete control of is your efforts.” When I read that line the first time I was sure that someone had a great motivational picture for it and so I went on the hunt. After a fairly extensive internet search I came up empty handed and decided I’d have to make it myself and so I did. It has started more than one conversation and everyone agrees you cannot argue with the reality of the statement but I did have one individual who admitted he didn’t like it. We can make excuses or we can make an effort. I’m proud to say that it looks to me like the people of Oklahoma City have decided to make an effort at conquering the recession and quite successfully too. Maybe we can’t hit like we could in our glory days but there is something to be said about experience and giving our best effort in the present days.

How fancy do you want it?

It was a drizzly Saturday morning but we were down on the river throwing rocks and just making the best of things when it started to sprinkle so we headed for higher ground.  Just about the time it started to rain we came upon an old structure that appeared to be sound but unoccupied so we took refuge.  It was a beautiful structure with ornate woodwork from the cornish work outside to the base boards on the floor.  It was obvious that whoever had built it took great pride in their work.  The feature in the building that impressed me the most was the marble seat with two holes.  Yes, this was an old outhouse but the prettiest outhouse I’ve ever seen.  I set out to discover the story behind this structure and found it was a very simple one.  The house that had at one time belonged to this outhouse was supposed to have been magnificent in every way and the builder felt like the outhouse should be equal in beauty.  I’m not going to try and make some connection as to why the outhouse survived and not the house but I found it nice during that rain storm to have a well built, dry, and interesting place to wait.  I’ve had clients ask me: “Do you think it’s wrong of me to want . . . in my new house?” To which I always answer: “Not if you can afford it.”  I know that it’s not “PC” to say it but “If you can afford it? Why Not?” you just might give someone a job and the economy would improve.  Don’t worry about the “experts” they specialize in making excuses for why their predictions don’t come true.  So if you’re looking for a double wide with a master bath large enough for a 42 inch flat screen television or a 12 bedroom manor with a marble two seat outhouse give one of our Paradigm AdvantEdge REALTORS® a call.  We specialize in finding what you want and can afford.  Ain’t it great to be an American!
